The Yos

Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it’s only by this meeting that a new world is born.  ~Anais Nin

I’m a lucky gal for many reasons, but I feel especially fortunate to have lots of good lady-friends.  Work friends, school friends, political friends and old friends. This last group of women (Amy, Meg, Sara, and Ang) are known affectionately as the Yos…a name that can be traced back to a Yo-ex that confused Yo-Yo with Ya-Ya. He got the boot, but the name stuck.  I’ve known these Lovelies for nearly 20 years, ever since fate put Amy and me in the same dorm at University of Idaho back in Nineteen tickety-two. We  immediately recognized a kindred in one another, and lived together for the next three ridiculously fun, reckless, carefree, intoxicated/ing years on the Palouse in Moscow. Meg was a high-school friend of Amy’s who came to visit us often, Sara is Amy’s younger sister, and Ang was a friend of Sara’s from Boise.  Somehow, this ragtag group of five young ladies gravitated together and stuck like planets around the same star. Much like I assume we have done for countless millennia…(the Salem witch trials were intense, y’all, but we’re back!)

We’ve been together through a lot. Marriages, divorces, kids, pets, moves, jobs, sick parents, So.Many.Dudes… and mostly, belly laughs. And laughs and laughs and laughs. Although Sara and I have moved away and come back to Boise, Amy moved away permanently after getting married and returning to her roots in the Midwest. I guess she was sick of our bullshit. At least that’s what she said when she left. 😛 Since that time, at least once a year, we still get together for a week of debauchery and good, good times.

Amy arrived on Thursday and it’s been ON since then. Cocktails, BBQ, Yo Night (when we get together to cook and drink and judge), the FAIR forcryingoutloud, Sunday brunch. It always goes by too quickly, but we manage to squeeze every drop of joy out of the time we are together…enough to sustain us for another year.

<3 Love you forever, my darling YOs. XOXOXOXO <3
